Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's letter conveying to me your decision in the case of Messrs. Rahnault alias Sales.

I requested those officers to appear before me this morning, and I then administered to them, in the presence of the Registrar, a reprimand and caution in the terms mentioned by Your Excellency, dwelling especially upon the breach of trust of which they have been guilty in allowing private and personal considerations to interfere with the course of their official duties.

I have to thank Your Excellency for giving weight to my recommendations, and beg to be allowed to express my belief that Your Excellency's decision will duly answer the purposes both of punishment and example.

If Messrs. Rahman and Sales should in the future give complete satisfaction in the performance of their duties,

I would even hope that after a sufficient period has elapsed, their original salaries might be restored to them, though I do not at all suggest that the expectation of such a course should in any way be held out to them at present.
